Where are you?

Fellow Campers,
I have set up this blog as a way for any member of the  Camp Wampatuck family to keep in touch.  I heard from Karen Switzer years ago and it brought back so many memories.  I know you are out there with memories to share, counselor hunts, campfires, ceremonial night, favorite songs and counselors.  How about Mrs. Carlson, Prof and his entire family?  Switz sent me some pictures and I will try and upload them sometime soon.  This is a great time to share memories with each other.  I hope to hear from some of you soon.

I remember the camp with many wonderful memories. I went from the middle to late 70's from when I was 12 years old right into being a counselor myself! I loved the place. Prof and Mrs. Longley were like a second set of parents, loving yet firm in their guidance. I loved the activities, the cabins, Sunset Knoll and the camraderie. I was even honored with the leadership award one session - it was the highlight of my summer! It was a place of wonder where I learned many skills - archery, volleyball, smallcrafts, sharpshooting and best of all I made many friends. I'll forever cherish these memories and never forget this wonderful place. I, also, was extremely saddened when I found out that the camp no longer existed. We need more places like this for children to grow and learn. (Diana - originally from Long Island, New York!)

I was friends with Lori Kagno, Brigid Wyse and Kim Grifiths..I have thought about the camp many times in my life. I had always hoped there would be a reunion at some point. My name is Lisa Bower and my sister's name is Kari Bower..

I was a camper and counselor from 1963 through 1976, and I do remember those mentioned here -- Rochelle Lappen, Jean Eaton, Ina Turok, Beth and Kim Griffith, Lisa and Kari Bower and Shelly (although I don't remember her name either, but do recall her red hair). I also remember a lot of others from 14 memorable summers. The last time I saw Prof and Mrs. Longley was several years after I started working at the St. Petersburg Times. They used to winter in Florida, and when my boyfriend (now my husband) and I took a camping trip near where they lived, we visited them for a few hours. Must have been around 1978 or 1979. They looked well, but I have not heard anything about them or their family since, although I have thought of them often through the years, just like, as someone said, a second set of parents.

I just did a some research and found, sadly, that Prof died in Florida in 1992 at age 79. An excerpt from the posting:

Grant F. Longley, 79 Junior college athletic director

Article from: The Boston Globe (Boston, MA)
Article date: October 29, 1992

Grant Fairbanks Longley, a retired teacher, coach and athletic director at Dean Junior College in Franklin, died Friday in his retirement home in Venice, Fla. He was 79.

Mr. Longley was born in Georgetown and attended the Perley Free High School. He received a bachelor's degree from Springfield College, a master's from Boston University and a doctorate from the University of Santa Barbara in California.

At Dean Junior College, Mr. Longley taught psychology and physiology, coached a variety of sports teams and, during many of his 40 years there, served as athletic director. In 1973, the school's athletic field was renamed in Mr. Longley's honor.

If you want a real trip down memory lane, I found a VHS tape by Prof available for purchase on Amazon.com:

"Line Dancing for Seniors with Dr. Grant Longley"

Brings back memories of his teaching us square and line dancing at camp. I just ordered a copy.
